Chapter 2

chapter 2begins on the train that the Jews were forced to board. This train brought them to an unknown destination, and there is a huge amount of fear withen all of the passengers on board.
On the train there is one passenger named Mrs. Schachter who goes crazy due to the loss of her husband and two of her sons. Each night, she would scream "Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire!"
At the end of the chapter, the train and passengers arrive at Aushwitz, one of the most well-known concentration camps. As the train pulls up, the passengers see large clouds of smoke rising up into the sky. This is quite ironic, because earlier in the chaper, Mrs. Schachter was yelling that she saw fire, and now they actually did see fire.

Chapter 1

In chapter 1, we learn about a boy named Elie. He was a young jewish boy who lived in a little Jewish village, also called a shtetl in Transylvania. He is a young boy who dedicates his days to studying judiasm, studing the talmud during the day and studing kabalah. We learn first about his family and his mentor. Later in the chapter, the germans enter the village and the takeover begins. During the 7th day of passover, things start to get bad when first the jews were banned from leaving their homes under the penalty of death. Next, they could not own any valuables. Lastly they had to wear a yellow star on their arm. Throughout the rest of the chapter, fear rises when they start to be departed from the ghetto, to the concentration camps. Young Elie can only wait and predict what will be to come.
